User Registration, Lost Password Etc

I know we've had this discussion before but I'm posting because I've looked into WP core's API user functionality and user registration has been intentionally left out. There is a create user endpoint, but that's for an authenticated user, obviously an admin function.

So I'm mentioning here but I may try to make my own API for user registration/lost password.

I doubt this one will ever make it. Users should be created using the website. Keeping it open, but setting to wontfix now.

Is there a way to create or modify a user through the main Wordpress REST API then? I can do that fine, but cannot for the life of me assign the virtual role bbp_participant. If there is a way, please enlighten me, if not, i'd be willing to contribute code for the add_role call that seems to be neccessary. Of course, the potential new API needs to accept authenticated calls only.
